Explaining to children diagnosed with celiac disease about their illness and the steps they need to take for life is not always an easy road.

As parents, it is important to communicate at the appropriate level for the child so that the message comes across clearly and the child can take it in the best possible way. Fortunately, we are not alone in this process and there are many tools that can help us with our children.

Children's stories are an entertaining way to let the child know about their condition, in a simple language adapted to their age.

Today we would like to introduce you to some of the stories we can tell them about celiac disease. As a suggestion the stories could be taken to the classroom as a way to achieve inclusion with the rest of the group.

Dear Celiac by Kristen Adam

Kristen became quite frustrated while navigating the world of gluten free living. She decided it was time for celiac disease to know just how she felt! As you join her on this roller coaster of emotions, remember, you are not alone, Kristen is right there with you.

Adam’s Gluten Free Surprise by Debbie Simpson

This "children's" book is helping teachers, grandparents, childcare providers, and others understand what gluten is. It is helping them understand the importance of food safety while including all children.

Adam through his first six months of a new school year after being diagnosed with celiac disease. He is very accepting of his medically required diet, offering a, “That’s OK,” when he cannot be included in a special treat with his peers.

Adam’s attitude, as well as his ability to speak up for his needs, offers other children a positive role model. But he also shows others the sad feelings that can arise, and that are so natural when a person feels left out or when they cannot eat something that looks and smells good. In the end, Adam’s teacher and peers understand a bit more about gluten.

Gluten Makes My Tummy Roar by Melinda Martell

Casey Kramps is a 6 year old little boy who is newly diagnosed with celiac disease. He meets Willie Villie from the Gluten Free Planet who shows him that he just needs to make dietary changes to live a happy and healthy life.

Their extraordinary adventure together allows Casey to understand more about his autoimmune disorder and to accept his lifetime dietary changes. Casey is no longer depressed about his diet and looks at his new dietary changes in a more positive and optimistic manner.
